Retrograde intra-renal surgery successful at Manipal

PANAJI

Kidney stones in a 20-year-old patient were successfully removed through one of the latest sub-specialities in urological practice, Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery (RIRS) procedure at Manipal Hospitals Goa.The procedure involves the use of a feasible ureteroscope, a fine-calibre endoscope that can be passed through the natural urine passage into the kidney. The interior of the kidney is like a honeycomb, and the scope being flexible can access every nook and corner of the kidney. In combination with holmium laser, it can be used to treat stones, tumours, and areas of narrowing (stenosis/structures). The advantages of RIRS procedure is the minimal use of anaesthesia, quick recovery, and next day discharge. The patient had a history of repeated episodes of kidney stone, causing pain and needing multiple admissions. Post diagnosis, it was revealed that he had nearly 20 stones in both kidneys. "The patient underwent a bilateral RIRS procedure through which we were able to remove all the kidney stones. The 3-month follow-up scan showed that the patient has been cleared of all the kidney stones,” informed Dr Madhav Sanzgiri, consultant urologist at this hospital.
