A two-day MTTS Overture Programme was successfully held at Ganpat Parsekar College of Education, Harmal, from February 3-4, under the aegis of Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) trust.

The event was coordinated by Suraj Parmekar, assistant professor of Mathematics, with assistant professors Namrata Khorje and Soham Ashvekar as part of the organising team.

To further the reach of MTTS training to a larger audience of deserving students, the MTTS Overture programme was started in 2023 through which two-day workshops are held in colleges across the country. In each of these camps, about 40 local UG students are trained by experienced MTTS faculty, exposing them to the MTTS learning methodology, and to various resources for self-learning. The pilot project in 2023 had a significant impact, leading the trust to make this a regular activity.

The resource persons for the programme included Dr Ananthnarayan Hariharan, associate professor at IIT Bombay; Pranil Waikar, assistant professor at Jai Hind College, Mumbai; Dr Haritha Cheriyath, postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Chile; and Dr Arusha C, postdoctoral research fellow at IIT Bombay. Notably, this marked the first MTTS event in Goa in nearly nine years.

The programme began with the opening ceremony, where officiating principal Dr Pandurang Pandit extended a warm welcome to the MTTS faculty and participants from various institutions. The chief guest, Dr Niyan Marchon, professor at the Centre for TLET, Goa State Higher Education Council, DHE Goa, emphasised the importance of making mathematics engaging for younger learners. Dr Ananthnarayan Hariharan provided an insightful overview of MTTS and the objectives of the overture programme.

Over the two days, seven sessions were conducted, covering key topics such as Foundations, Linear Algebra, and Analysis. Each session was followed by group discussions, fostering an interactive and collaborative learning environment. Various learning resources were also shared with the students.

The valedictory function featured Laxmikant Parsekar, chairman of Harmal Panchakroshi Shikshan Mandal, as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasised the importance of organising such programmes to benefit both teachers and students of mathematics. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Suraj Parmekar.
