Congress leader Royla Fernandes has filed an election petition against the Aam Aadmi Party’s lone Zilla Panchayat member Hanzel Fernandes for allegedly contesting the Zilla Panchayat elections from Benaulim, an OBC seat, using a dubious caste certificate.
Royla told The Goan that she has filed the election petition before the administrative tribunal challenging the caste certificate produced by Hanzel before the State Election Commission along with his nomination papers. “In his nomination papers, this candidate has claimed that he is a ‘mesta chari’. However, the candidate is a Christian and it is not clear whether the ‘Christian chari mesta’ is a reserved OBC caste as per the notification in Goa,” Royla stated.
