All eyes are focused on the Varca panchayat as the local body is all set to elect a new Sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch on January 22. The election assumes importance as the government took one month time to fill up the vacant posts.Six members of the Varca panchayat had voted out the Sarpanch Reginaldo Rodrigues and deputy Vincentina Fernandes from office in a no confidence motion. Sources in the know informed that the six signatories Crosly Charlton Jose Lourenco, Rosario Leao Cardozo, Shalini Pereira, Tercy D’Costa, Francisco Fernandes and Romeu Pereira are believed to have met and decided to chart out an independent course in the panchayat body.
That’s not all. Crosly Charlton Lourenco, who is tipped to be the new Varca sarpanch, is the Benaulim block Congress president.When contacted, Charlton Lourenco said that the six member group is together and will together elect a new Sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch, even as he parried a question whether the new group will be aligned to any politician or political party.Incidentally, the Varca panchayat had come under the rule of an administrator on December 22, the day when the sarpanch and deputy Sarpanch were voted out of office. While the Panchayat Director had initially fixed the election to fill up the vacant posts on January 18 after much delay, the election has now been fixed on January 22.
