Fishermen in north belt of Goa especially from Chapora and nearby villages who are dependent or operate from the Chapora Jetty have been crying and demanding better facilities and repairs to this Jetty. On Wednesday, Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo, raised concerns about the deteriorating state of the Chapora Jetty.
Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar confirmed that the government is aware of the poor condition of Chapora Jetty. The jetty's dilapidated state has raised significant concerns among local residents and fishermen.
To address the issue, the government plans to upgrade the Chapora Fish Landing Centre. This upgrade will involve not only repairing the jetty but also constructing additional facilities such as a security room and toilets. The Water and Power Consultancy Service (WAPCOS) has been appointed as the Project Executing Agency (PEA) for this project. WAPCOS will handle the implementation of the upgrade under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and other state-funded projects.
The Department of Fisheries has received proposals for the repair work of the jetty. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the upgrade has been submitted to the Government of India to secure funding. The department is awaiting approval and further instructions to move forward with the repair and upgrade process.
The upgrade aims to improve the facilities at Chapora Jetty and ensure better conditions for the local fishing community, he added in his reply.
