As Goa’s peak tourist season is in full swing, club owners are facing increasing pressure as authorities step up efforts to enforce noise control regulations.
Over the past week, several establishments along the coastal belt have been penalised for playing loud music and hosting late-night parties, after the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) raised concerns about noise pollution.
However, many club owners feel that the enforcement is unfairly targeting certain venues while overlooking others. Despite the penalties, some establishments continue to promote events that extend into the early morning hours, with advertisements for parties running until 5 am still circulating widely. This has sparked frustration among club owners, who feel the authorities are not applying the rules equally.
'The Goan' spoke to local restaurant and pub owners to understand their perspectives on the ongoing issue.
A restaurant owner from Siolim, who prefers to follow the rules, stated, “We make sure to stop music by 10 pm to avoid disturbing the peace. However, during the peak season, the number of tourists increases significantly, and many come to Goa specifically for the party atmosphere. The government must consider offering some relief during the festive and tourist season.”
When asked about establishments continuing to advertise late-night events, despite the authorities' actions, he said, “These kinds of events happen all year round. It’s up to the authorities to ensure the rules are enforced equally across all establishments. The laws should be applied to everyone, not just certain places.”
A pub owner from Assagao echoed similar thoughts, calling for a more balanced approach. “Authorities should allow music a little later during the peak season. Most people who visit the northern coast of Goa come for the nightlife, dancing, and parties. While noise pollution should not be allowed, there must be room for outdoor events under proper guidelines,” he said.
On the ongoing issue of clubs continuing to advertise late-night events despite the authorities' crackdown, the pub owner said, “It’s clear that these establishments are ignoring the rules, and authorities seem to only address what they want to see. It’s a sad reality.”
