Chief Minister Pramod Sawant strongly endorsed implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across India and the One Nation One Election, asserting the concept will prevent India from Pakistan and Bangladesh-like crisis.
Speaking at the inauguration of the year-long celebration of 75 years of the Indian Constitution, Sawant emphasised the importance of understanding and adhering to the fundamentals of India’s democracy.
"Everyone knows the situation of Pakistan and Bangladesh. In India, we follow democracy “ of the people, by the people, and for the people. India is the mother of democracy. If we don’t understand or follow its fundamentals, we could turn into Bangladesh or Pakistan," he said.
He also stated that Goa was the first to implement the UCC, setting an example for the rest of the country.
"Goa is a model state for the country, and we are ahead in achieving betterment. Everyone is fighting for their rights, but I request everyone to follow the duties outlined by our Constitution. This will ensure real justice for the people of India," Sawant added.
On the need for a uniform civil code and a unified election process, Sawant asked, "Why should there not be a Uniform Civil Code or One Nation, One Election where everyone is treated equally?"
Meanwhile, retired Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, Justice Siddharth Mridul, called on Goans to take responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of Goa’s beaches.
"It would be salutary if all of us, as and when we visit the beaches, make sure that all the plastic generated and thrown into the sea daily is collected and deposited with the authorities," he said.
Justice Mridul further urged the Union government to enact legislation on sanitation and cleanliness, as public health and sanitation fall under concurrent jurisdiction.
