The Sessions Judge, North Goa at Merces, has directed activist Rama Kankonkar to file his say on the bail application of accused and alleged history-sheeter Zenito Cardozo in connection with the September 18 assault case.
Kankonkar, who had moved an intervention application, has now been asked to submit his response on October 16 while adjourning the bail hearing to October 17.
The counsel representing Cardozo and the prosecution did not oppose Kankonkar’s intervention. “This is an application for intervention. The application for intervention is not objected by the Ld PP nor Advocate for the applicant. Hence, application for intervention is allowed,” Judge Irshad Agha observed in its order.
Cardozo, who was among the eight accused arrested in connection with the assault, filed for bail on October 7, relying on certain points including the police’s statement that Kankonkar had not named any politician or mastermind.
According to the police, Kankonkar identified only one person, Minguel, as one of the attackers in his statement while the others remain unidentified. He has, however, stated that he would be able to recognise them if a test identification parade is conducted.
In his media statements, Kankonkar maintained that he doubts Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. However, police did not question him on any political links to the incident.
