A suspended IRBn constable was arrested on charges of robbing a gold mangalsutra worth Rs 1.8 lakh from a woman at Torxem-Pernem on Thursday morning.
This is the second crime involving the accused, Nikesh Chari (34) of Pethechawada-Korgao, in less than a year.
According to reports, a 55-year-old woman had gone to her maternal home and was walking along the road when a person riding a scooter snatched her Mangalsutra weighing 20 grams and worth Rs 1.8 lakh in Torxem-Pernem, before attempting to flee from the site.
The woman raised an alarm, and two youths who were nearby ran to her aid and chased the suspect in their car.
On receiving news of the incident, a police team led by Mopa Airport PI Narayan Chimulkar proceeded to Torxem. Enquiries revealed that the accused had proceeded towards Tamboxem on a scooter.
The police team then rushed to Tamboxem and found that the scooter used by the culprit was found lying by the roadside, leading to a jungle.
After an intensive combing operation in the jungle with the help of locals, Mopa Airport Police succeeded in tracing the accused, Nikesh Chari (34) of Pethechawada-Korgao.
Chari was arrested under Section 304 of BNS, and the stolen mangalsutra was recovered from him.
Incidentally, Chari had been arrested along with another person in August 2024 on charges of attempting to abduct a one-and-a-half-year-old boy from Sukalwada-Korgao. A case under Sections 137(2) R/w 3(5) of BNS and Section 8 of the Goa Children Act has been registered against him in that connection. He is presently under suspension.
