The issue of heavy trucks being parked on road shoulders and the absence of a truck terminus figured prominently at the meeting of the South Goa District Road Safety Traffic Committee on Tuesday.
The absence of illumination on the Nuvem“Arlem stretch of the Eastern Bypass also figured in the discussions. Politicians putting up hoardings and boards along electric and other poles also came up for discussion.
The meeting discussed the absence of a truck terminus when it was raised by consumer rights activist Lorna Fernandes. She pointed out that trucks are found parked on the road shoulders on the NH66 at Cuncolim for want of a truck terminus. She informed that the truck drivers park their vehicles on the road shoulders and even cook food under the vehicles. “This has to stop immediately. One way to resolve the issue is by setting up a truck terminus. This is an issue faced on the Ponda roads as well. The District Road Safety Committee will send minutes of the meeting to the government for action,” she said.
The consumer rights activists also highlighted the potholed roads and the stray cattle menace on the roads, contributing to the rising number of road accidents. The activists also highlighted the non-functional traffic signals installed at several junctions in Salcete taluka.
