Voices of Goa: Activists navigate threats, challenges in digital era

MAPUSA

In the compact and interconnected state of Goa, activists are a prominent and familiar presence. Known almost universally by face, if not by name, these individuals have harnessed the power of social media “ platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and WhatsApp “ to amplify their messages and campaigns.

Goan activists frequently produce and disseminate videos that spotlight a wide array of issues.

While some of these videos are meticulously researched and compelling, prompting public engagement and awareness, others fall short, perceived as shallow and uninteresting.

A growing trend within this digital activism is the creation of videos that criticise or target individuals or societal practices, stirring discomfort and sometimes controversy within the community.

Voices of resilience,

responsibility

Among the notable figures in this landscape is Swapnesh Sherlekar from Mulgao, Assonora.

Sherlekar, whose videos delve into land issues in Goa, stands out for his commitment to factual accuracy and thorough research. Despite facing subtle threats in the comments on his videos, he remains undeterred.

"Our videos are based on well-researched data, which is why there are no complaints against me so far," Sherlekar asserts.

His work often addresses overlooked issues, such as the operations of the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department and broader governance concerns, filling a void left by mainstream media.

Similarly, Tara Kerkar, who heads the NGO Savera, leverages video content to advocate for women's issues and broader social awareness. Despite attempts to discredit her through false accusations, Kerkar remains steadfast.

"I aim to create awareness among the people, point out government faults, expose scams, and also praise good work. I don't belong to any party and don't want to hurt anyone," she explains, underscoring her impartial stance and the positive reception her videos receive.

Confronting power with

unwavering determination

Activists like Walter Lobo from Calangute adopt a more confrontational approach.

Known for his candid and often abrasive style, Lobo's videos frequently attract threats from those with political connections.

"People I take on usually have strong connections with politicians. There are even fake molestation cases filed against me," he reveals, expressing frustration over the lack of support for activists under government pressure.

His use of strong language, he argues, reflects the public sentiment and aims to hold both the government and the media accountable.

Xencor Polgi from Vasco faces similar challenges, particularly from powerful interest groups. His environmental advocacy, focusing on issues like coal pollution, garbage, and hill cutting, has not been without repercussions.

Despite complaints and an FIR, Polgi remains committed to his cause, ensuring that his videos are fact-based and devoid of abusive content to mitigate the risk of defamation suits.

Ethical and legal tightrope

Aishwarya Salgaonkar represents a more measured approach to activism. Despite facing allegations and legal challenges, she maintains a positive and respectful tone in her videos.

"We do our videos responsibly, without using abusive language or swear words. Even if someone targets me negatively, I reply with positivity," Salgaonkar states, emphasising the constitutional right to hold politicians accountable.

Her resilience in the face of FIRs and complaints highlights the enduring spirit of Goan activists.

The experiences of these activists underscore the complex and often perilous landscape of digital activism in Goa.

While their methods and styles may vary, a common thread unites them: a steadfast commitment to justice, transparency, and public awareness.

Despite facing threats, legal battles, and attempts at discreditation, these activists continue to leverage social media to shine a light on critical issues, embodying the resilient spirit of advocacy in the digital age.

In a world where the line between free speech and defamation is increasingly blurred, these activists walk a delicate tightrope, balancing their right to question and criticise with the need for responsibility and accuracy.

Their stories are a testament to the power of digital platforms in fostering civic engagement and the enduring struggle for social justice.
