A major water pipeline burst occurred at Dabolim on Thursday morning after a contractor, engaged in road widening work near the highway flyover, reportedly damaged the line, leading to the wastage of thousands of litres of drinking water.

The incident disrupted the water supply to surrounding areas and caused traffic congestion after a huge fountain of water erupted from the damaged line. Videos of the scene quickly went viral on social media.

PWD officials blamed the contractor for negligence, stating that despite repeated warnings, safety norms around utility lines were not followed. "The contractor excavated the area around the pipeline without providing any external support. Due to the immense water pressure, the pipeline gave way and burst," said a PWD worker on site.

The official further revealed that a similar issue had occurred the previous night, which had been temporarily fixed. However, on Thursday morning, the pipeline joint opened again, leading to another round of heavy water leakage.

Repair works were carried out later in the day and the water supply was restored after the damaged section was fixed. Authorities have warned of action if such lapses are repeated.
