Work on playground for Goa Velha to begin soon: MLA

Says VP to also get new panchayat ghar

OLD GOA

St Andre MLA Francisco Silveira on Saturday said the long pending demand of Goa Velha sports lovers to have a playground of their own will finally become a reality as the tender for the same has been published and work will begin shortly.

He also said that work on a new panchayat ghar for Goa Velha panchayat will also be taken up as it has also been tendered.

Silveira made the announcement will speaking as the chief guest at a function organised by Goa Velha panchayat to distribute musical and sports equipments among other items to religious and educational institutes.

“Initially, I had taken up the work of Goa Velha playground way back in 2008 but for some reasons, then panchayat authorities took the issue to the court due to which the work stopped,” Silveira said.

“But now, the work for the development of the playground has been tendered for Rs 3.5 crore and it will commence shortly,” he added.

It may be recalled that The Goan had highlighted that the current panchayat had issued NOC for development of the playground, ending a decade old legal battle and paving way for its development.

Further, Silveira informed that the Goa Velha panchayat will soon have a new panchayat ghar as the same has been tendered for around Rs 3 crore.

The Goan has learnt that the panchayat currently functions from congested premises with less than 50 square metres space.

The new panchayat will be a ground plus two-storey building with the ground floor reserved for shops and market, the first floor for panchayat office and the top floor for community hall.

Meanwhile, Silveira appealed to people not to block traditional water pathways.

“I request the people not to block traditional water pathways like nullahs and drainages which has resulted in waterlogged roads,” he pleaded.
