After weeks of delay, the Mormugao Municipal Council has finally confirmed to the High Court of Bombay at Goa that a substantial portion of the illegally erected “Murgao Cha Raja” shed at Sada has been pulled down and the remaining demolition would be completed within two days.
The submission came two days after the High Court issued a final warning to the MMC Chief Officer that a formal contempt proceeding would follow if its order to demolish the structure was not complied within 48 hours.
When the matter came up for further hearing on Wednesday, the Chief Officer submitted a report informing the Division Bench of Justice Valmiki Menezes and Justice Amit Jamsandekar that the shed had been partially demolished and that the exercise would be completed within two days.
Taking note of the submission, the Bench adjourned the matter to October 12 for a further report.
“Given the demolition of the shed structure, as stated in the report placed before the Court, a substantial part of the structure has been demolished, and it is stated that the demolition will be completed within two days. List the matter on October 12 for a further report,” the Bench said.
The High Court had previously directed the Chief Officer to demolish the shed, with September 30 set as the latest deadline. The failure to comply with the order prompted the Bench to question the civic body’s inaction and issue a warning to the Chief Officer.
