Amid growing concerns over rash driving by tourists in the State, a tourist couple riding a rent-a-bike scooter was involved in an accident with a taxi cab on the Siolim-Marna road on Sunday, once again drawing attention to road safety issues linked to rental vehicles.

According to the taxi driver, the scooter was allegedly being ridden on the wrong side of the road when it collided head-on with the cab. The scooter, reportedly carrying a tourist couple, was travelling from Mapusa towards Siolim at the time of the accident.

The impact of the collision was severe, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The taxi suffered significant damage to its front portion and a tyre burst due to the force of the crash. The rent-a-bike scooter was also badly damaged and was flung to the opposite side of the road.

The pillion rider sustained injuries in the accident and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The condition of the injured person was not immediately known.

The incident comes at a time when tourists driving rental vehicles in a reckless manner have increasingly come under scrutiny in the State. Residents and road safety activists have repeatedly raised concerns about visitors riding or driving without adequate familiarity with local roads, often ignoring traffic rules and, in some cases, driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sunday's accident is being viewed as yet another example of the dangers posed by rash driving on the State's roads.

The growing number of accidents involving rent-a-bike scooters and rental vehicles has renewed calls for stricter enforcement, improved monitoring of rental operators and greater accountability among tourists using such vehicles.

Anjuna police have registered the case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
