Traffic chaos mars final day of Purumentachem Fair in Margao

The traffic congestion on the Old market roads on Sunday evening.

Traffic chaos reigned at the Old Market on Sunday as thousands thronged the area for shopping on the final day of the week-long Purumentachem fest fair.

Motorists and pedestrians were literally left to fend for themselves as hardly any traffic personnel were seen managing traffic on the last day of the fair.

As a result, bumper-to-bumper traffic was witnessed at the Old Market circle. Two-wheelers were parked on both sides of the road near the chapel and in front of adjoining establishments due to inadequate parking facilities.

Demanding the presence of traffic personnel, a motorist observed, “Had a traffic police officer been stationed on one side to regulate the flow of vehicles moving in both directions, it would have helped ensure smooth traffic movement. However, the absence of any traffic police deployment in the area resulted in complete chaos.”

Motorists also faced a daunting challenge manoeuvring their vehicles from internal lanes onto the main road. As a result, long queues of vehicles formed, causing significant disruption to traffic flow along the main thoroughfare stretching from Colva Circle to the Kadamba Bus Stand.
