Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai on Sunday said it is the duty of every young person to imbibe the values, ideas and vision of renowned Goan nationalist Dr Francisco Luis Gomes.

Speaking at a function in Navelim to mark Dr Gomes’ birth anniversary, the Minister described him as one of Goa’s greatest thinkers, a pioneering nationalist voice and a champion of justice and education.

Dr Francisco Luis Gomes Trust president Luizinho Faleiro said Dr Gomes’ legacy remains relevant even today. He noted that the Goan intellectual had advocated human rights, freedom and social justice long before India’s freedom movement gained momentum.

Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar also addressed the gathering, while Parish Priest Fr Gabriel Coutinho welcomed the guests.

The programme was organised by the South Goa Collectorate. South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, ZP member Melifa Cardozo, Navelim Sarpanch Paul Pereira, South Goa SP Santosh Dessai and other officials were present.
