After several scams, specially relating to land, where archival records were misused came to light, the Archives Department on Thursday issued a new set of rules for public entry and inspection of records in the department.

According to the new rules, public will be permitted to enter the general servicing area with only a paper and pen where an ID proof will have to be submitted for application of records.

The rules also state that no photography of records will be allowed and that mobiles will have to be switched off. Public will also not be allowed to copy/write down the contents of public records.

However, research scholars will be permitted to enter with a book, pen/pencil and laptop.

Heirs/parties to the inventory proceedings can apply or an authority letter from the heirs or parties with ID proof has to be submitted for inspection and application of the inventory files.

The department also issued a notification specifying charges for digital reprography services where applicants will have to pay Rs 250 per image.
