Key government officials failed to attend a site inspection called by the Betalbatim Village Panchayat on Monday, following complaints by local farmers that a hotel had blocked traditional access to their agricultural fields.
Despite the absence of representatives from the Town and Country Planning Department, Water Resources Department, and Health Department, the panchayat proceeded with the inspection in the presence of aggrieved farmers and local citizens.
Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes later told the media after the inspection that the panchayat would place the inspection report before the Additional Director of Panchayats, who has been hearing a petition on the issue. “The farmers have been demanding access to their fields for a long time now. We have inspected the site in question. The report will be filed before the authorities,” the Sarpanch said.
Activist Fidol Pereira said the affected farmers have been fighting for more than 20 years to restore their access.
“These farmers have been cultivating their fields despite the blocked path. But without access, they cannot transport implements and equipment. We will not rest till the farmers are given justice,” she asserted while commending the panchayat secretary for his proactive role in conducting the inspection.
