The Belagavi unit of Parisarakkagi Naavu, meaning “we for the environment”, on the occasion of World Water Day, has called upon people to join hands in a concerted effort to clean up River Malaprabha at Kankumbi village of Khanapur taluka and surrounding areas on March 22 from 8 am to 10 am.

The event aims to initiate the restoration of the river and its surroundings.

Volunteers and citizens from various villages and towns along the Malaprabha and its tributaries Mangetri and Halatri in the Khanapur–Belagavi region, are expected to participate in the event, apart from persons from other parts of the district.

The primary objective of this initiative is to rid the river of non-degradable, harmful and toxic solid waste and trash, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier ecosystem. The ultimate vision is to work tirelessly until the river is restored to its pristine state from its origin at Kankumbi to its confluence at Kudala Sangama in Bagalkot district.

On March 22, the locations for river clean-up will be Kankumbi Temple, Habaratti Temple, Kusmalli to Jamboti River Bridge, Jamboti to Khanapur Olmani New Bridge, etc.

Participants will have to bring their own drinking water, refreshments/food, caps and wear comfortable waterproof footwear (if possible). River banks, open dry water, and exposed water beds will be cleaned.

Members of Parisarakkagi Naavu said participants are restricted from entering deep waters for their safety and are advised not to carry valuables or wear expensive accessories. Organisers will not be responsible for any loss/theft/injuries due to negligent behaviour, they said.
