Tiatr lovers, political and social activists on Tuesday marched to Canacona Ravindra Bhavan to enquire about the re-opening of its main Sanjay Bandekar auditorium, which has been closed ever since pre-monsoon rains flooded the complex on May 20.
Finding no officer at the Ravindra Bhavan (Lata Mangeshkar Kalangan) to address their queries, they submitted a memorandum to the Canacona deputy collector and Ravindra Bhavan member secretary, asking authorities to resolve all issues plaguing the Canacona Ravindra Bhavan before re-opening the main auditorium for Tiatr and other cultural activities.
South Goa Congress General Secretary (Org) Gaspar Coutinho, who led the group, told media persons that an intimation had been given to the Directorate of Arts & Culture, that people would visit the Ravindra Bhavan to seek answers regarding the reopening of the auditorium.
It may be recalled that the Canacona Ravindra Bhavan’s Sanjay Bandekar Auditorium Hall was closed for all cultural activities on May 20, forcing the cancellation of a Tiatr slated for the day, after the overnight pre-monsoon rain water flooded the complex, and the taluka library block, damaging library books and furniture, besides causing damages to electrical fittings and amenities in the complex.
The activists have now emphasised the need to repair the malfunctioning central AC and the power generator, besides the functioning of the canteen facility, before the auditorium is renovated, repaired and made fully functional again.
“We submitted a memorandum to the deputy collector and member secretary of Canacona Lata Mangeshkar Kalangan (Ravindra Bhavan), stating that the faulty central AC which is unable to maintain the desired temperature in the auditorium creating problems for the audience, while the power generator fails to change over automatically whenever electricity supply fails in the Ravindra Bhavan,” said Coutinho.
“The canteen is still not operational. Besides, we have sought an update on the status of the repair and renovation particularly in the auditorium hall, and when the hall would be made available to stage Tiatr and other cultural activities.”
“The officer promised to forward these demands to the office concerned and also assured that the canteen space would be allotted soon.”
