The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday finally demolished the dilapidated bungalow near the Krantiveer Chowk in Mapusa.

The bungalow had fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance over the years and in September 2019, a portion of the building had collapsed.

Considering the danger it posed to the public, the MMC had issued notices to the landlords, instructing them to demolish the bungalow.

The MMC then issued a final notice to the house owners and requested the district collector to take necessary action in this regard.

Following the approval of the district collector, the MMC on Wednesday began the task of demolishing the bungalow through the demolition squad of the PWD. During the demolition work, a portion of the roof fell on the JCB. Fearing a threat, the JCB operator expressed his inability to continue the work and the demolition drive was stopped midway.

On Friday morning, a portion of the partially demolished bungalow collapsed due to heavy rains and the MMC got in touch with the JCB operator to complete the demolition work.

The drive resumed and the entire house was demolished in the evening.

“We had undertaken the demolition of the bungalow in the interest of public safety and after following the necessary procedures. This morning, a part of the house collapsed and the JCB was immediately arranged to complete the demolition of the bungalow to avoid further threat to the public,” informed MMC Municipal Engineer Prashant Narvekar.

Meanwhile, the MMC also demolished a dilapidated house near Paulo Garage in Shetyewaddo, as it had posed a threat to a neighbouring house.
