The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) had activated a special 'emergency protocol' to manage the co-ordinated treatment by different departments of the victims of Saturday's stampede at the Shirgao Devi Lairai zatra, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said after visiting and interacting with some of those undergoing treatment on Sunday.

"As per today’s update, three out of the five critical patients are showing signs of improvement, while the remaining two continue to be critical but stable," Rane said, adding that 'Code Red Goa' was activated.

It is an emergency protocol under which groups of senior doctors and all clinical HODs led by the Dean come together to take immediate, collective decisions for the critically ill patients to ensure faster and more coordinated responses, he said.

Rane said, 'Code Red Goa' will soon be notified for all future emergencies.

"I will continue to personally monitor the progress of these patients to ensure that the highest standards of care are being maintained," he added.

Thirteen of those injured were brought to the GMC on Saturday and most were put on ventilators. Five of them are critical while one was discharged on Saturday itself.
