Denying any link to the two Goan trawlers detained in Maharashtra, Saligao MLA and GTDC Chairperson Kedar Naik has said attempts are being made to malign him ahead of the ZP elections.
Naik was reacting to speculations that a BJP MLA had owned one of the two trawlers detained in Maharashtra for using prohibited fishing equipment.
Speaking to media persons at Reis Magos on Saturday, Naik acknowledged that fishing has been his family business.
“I had five trawlers, of which I have sold one of them. After getting elected as MLA, I could not get time attend to my fishing business two years ago and I handed over the remaining four trawlers to another party under a legal contract. Hence, I have no connection with the fishing business,” said Naik.
“Fishing business requires a lot of time and politics does not provide me much time to look after this business. I am busy with my routine activities and serving my constituency is more important to me rather than anything else,” he added.
He claimed that attempts are being made to tarnish his image ahead of the ZP polls.
“Since the ZP elections are approaching and the assembly elections are not too far away, some people are trying to malign me. I reiterate that I have no connection with the fishing trawlers seized by Maharashtra authorities,” said Naik.
