1 killed, another serious in road mishap at Cortalim

One person was killed while another was seriously injured in a road mishap at Birla Cross Junction, Cortalim, on April 1.

According to police reports, the accident took place when Simon Leema of Honnavar, Uttara Kannada, was riding his motorcycle from Upasnagar-Sancoale, towards the Birla Cross Junction, Cortalim.

It is alleged that he was riding in a rash and negligent manner and, upon reaching the traffic signal point, crossed the highway towards Pinni side without proper caution, leading to a collision with another motorcycle. The impact further caused a secondary collision with a car.

The other motorcycle rider, Avinash Ponj of Vallant, Bardez, suffered grievous injuries, while Simon Leema fell on the road and was grievously injured. Leema later succumbed to injuries. The car driver, Marc Joaquim Fernandes, escaped unharmed.

Following the incident, an inquest panchnama was conducted, and the body was referred for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the family for final rites.

The Verna Police have registered an offence under Sections 281, 125(b), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Pramila Fernandes under the supervision of PI Melson Colaco and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on highways and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such unfortunate accidents.
