Stating that the focus of the BJP was to empower women, Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza on Saturday said that party has given 55 percent representation to women in its panel which will contest the civic election in Mapusa.
“Our aim is to promote women empowerment. Out of the total 20 wards in Mapusa we have given representation to 11 women candidates. No other municipality has given so much representation to women,” D’Souza said.
“I have full faith the voters of Mapusa will elect all our 11 women candidates,” he added.
The Mapsua MLA along with former-CM and observer, Laxmikant Parsekar was addressing the media while declaring the 20 candidates of the BJP panel “ Mapusa Development Front “ for the Mapusa Municipal Council election.
The convenor of the Mapusa Development Front, Rupesh Kamat announced the names of all 20 candidates.
Continuing, D’Souza said all the nominated candidates were selected on the feedback of the people in the wards.
He said the panel has 13 new faces and four youth have also been given representation in the election.
Former CM, Laxmikant Parsekar said the Constitution mandates 33 percent representation for women but the party has gone beyond that.
“For the first time so much representation has been given to women. The good thing is that the chairperson post is reserved for women in Mapusa,” Parsekar said.
He said the Mapusa civic body influences all the other seven constituencies in Bardez and therefore winning MMC was crucial for the party.
Promoting political legacy not a virtue: Parsekar
MAPUSA: Former CM, Laxmikant Parsekar on Saturday pompously announced that BJP has not promoted family raj while selecting candidates of its panel but had to admit that promoting political legacy was not a virtue.
“Retaining political legacy is definitely not a virtue but sometimes circumstances compel politicians to take certain decisions. A particular politician has a lot of goodwill among the public and is forced to field his or her kin in the election. Sometimes we don’t get candidates,” Parsekar said.
The former CM, however, basked in the achievement that his party has not promoted family raj in the civic election in Mapusa.
