The presence of Bangladeshi nationals in the State came to haunt the law enforcement agencies after the Colva police detained two brothers from the neighbouring country at Orlim.
This is the second instance of a Bangladeshi found residing along Salcete coastal belt, the first being a middle-aged man, detained at Varca.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Filomena D’Costa informed that the two brothers from Bangladesh were working in a scrapyard at Orlim, sorting out bottles. They have been identified as 40-year-old Sahini Fazal Karim and his 50-year-old brother. The duo is believed to hail from the Dharmaganj-Narayanganj area of Bangladesh.
PI Filomena further informed that the duo were not operating the scrapyard but were engaged as labourers by the owners in sorting the bottles and scrap.
The two brothers have been kept under house detention by the police at the place of their present residence, with a watch being maintained by the men-in-uniform.
To a question, PI Filomena informed that the formalities to deport the two brothers back to Bangladesh have been initiated, adding that till such time they are deported back to their country, the duo will remain under house detention.
The Colva police station in charge has informed that the presence of Bangladeshi nationals in the Colva police station jurisdiction is being unearthed by the intelligence sleuths as well as the beat police have been given clear directions to monitor the movements of strangers in the police station area.
To a question, of whether the Colva police will initiate action against the scrapyard or the owner who had given shelter to the two Bangladeshi nationals, PI Filomena Costa said the law will take its course against the violators. He has requested landlords to ensure they subject their tenants to police verification before they are given rent accommodation.
