2 canoes carrying float capsize at Cumbharjua Sangodd Utsav

OLD GOA

Two canoes carrying a float capsized at the fag end of the Cumbharjua Sangodd Utsav on Friday evening, but luckily all participants either swam to safety or were rescued by participants of other floats, thereby averting any tragedy at the annual festival.

Things went wrong when the float, which was tied with two canoes, tilted on one side due to the imbalance created after more participants went on one side.

The canoes then capsized, throwing the participants into the water. Many participants were able to swim safely to the shore, but some were seen struggling in the river at Cumbarjua.

The participants of the other floats then dived into the water and were able to rescue those participants who were struggling to stay afloat.

However, suspense continued as the organisers could not confirm whether all the participants were safe.

Announcements were made after it was found that one person was missing, but later it was confirmed that he had gone home.

The incident has, however, thrown questions about the safety aspect and the importance of having marine police patrol the river in case of such emergencies.

Meanwhile, a large number of people thronged Cumbarjua to partake in the Sangodd Utsav, which is celebrated on the seventh day of Ganesh immersion.

The floats are mostly based on mythological themes, but some highlight social aspects as well. The floats go around the river seven times after which the Ganesh idol is immersed and the Sangodd Utsav comes to an end.
