Lapses in security and surveillance at the Central Jail at Colvale were exposed yet again when a raid on Saturday revealed 20 mobile phones hidden in various cells of the prisoners.
This comes barely a week after eight mobile phones were seized from prisoners in a similar raid.
The high court had recently taken cognisance of mobile phones being used by inmates in the Central Jail and had issued orders to jail authorities to prevent inmates from using mobile phones in jail.
In this connection, the jail administration conducted a raid between 2 pm and 6 pm. Under the leadership of Inspector General of Prisons Keshav Ram Chaurasia and Superintendent of Police (Prisons) Sucheta Desai, jail officials with the help of Colvale, Mapusa, Anjuna police officers and IRB police, searched all sections in the prison.
During this search, 20 mobile phones were found hidden in various cells of the jail. The mobile phones were seized and handed over to the Colvale police for further action.
Last week, the jail administration had conducted a similar search and had found eight mobile phones with the prisoners. Those mobile phones had also been handed over to the Colvale police.
