NGPDA Chairman, Michael Lobo, said that 2,100 structures will get regularised in Calangute and Candolim after the State government accepts the land use map and land use register.

NGPDA had undertaken a massive seven-month long land use map and land use register exercise for Calangute and Candolim. Lobo informed that people of these two villages actively participated in this exercise to show their structures, along with number of floors they had built with the setbacks.

Lobo said: "Many of these structures are built on very small piece of land, wherein people haven’t left setback area, which is required under Town and Country Planning (TCP) rules. In many cases, they have built shops without leaving any setback. These people have asked for regularisation. We will send this proposal to chief town planner and TCP minister for their approval."

Calangute and Candolim are densely populated but they were brought under planning area only two years back. All these years people have built their houses and commercial establishments sometimes not following setback rules and other statutory norms.

NGPDA has approved the land use map and register for Calangute and Candolim, which will be sent to the government on September 26 for its approval. Lobo also said that NGPDA has given another 15 days to people of Calangute and Candolim to give suggestions on the draft outline development plan (ODP).

Lobo continued, “The draft ODP will contain what is required for future planning. We are showing a new proposed market complex for Candolim, multi-purpose hall for Candolim and Calangute and proposed football and cricket grounds in the draft ODP. Besides, we have declared Aguada plateau as heritage site and no commercial activities will be allowed there.”

The land use map and land use register exercise undertaken by NGPDA for Calangute and Candolim is the first such exercise after 1971.
