40K households in Margao, but only 20K garbage bins for distribution

the goan I network MARGAO Attention, Madgavkars. Will you be the lucky one to get free dustbin for the storage of wet and dry waste from the Margao civic body as around 20,000 bins were recently found dumped in the municipal garage at the old market recently. The last time the civic body had distributed free bins to the households in Margao and Fatorda was over half a decade ago. And, according to rough estimates, most of the bins are no more in use because of the wear and tear or were put to other use by the households. Questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body how the municipality will replace the damaged bins from the 40,000 households when only 20,000 bins were found stored in the garage. Sources in the know said the civic body has decided to distribute the bins equally amongst the City Fathers, with each councillor receiving around 800 bins, for wet and dry waste collection. Questions have been further raised whether the City Fathers will do justice for the bins as it is feared that the elected representatives may distribute the bins to their close supporters and workers in an election year. An official said the City Fathers are required to distribute the bins to the new houses and apartments that have come up in their respective wards, assuming that the civic body had covered most of the existing households last time round. Officials in the know pointed out that the civic body ought to have conducted a survey of the status of the bins distributed by the municipality over half a decade ago and the number of additional bins required by the civic body to cover all the households. Based on the requirements, the civic body should have made a detailed representation to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) for supply of the bins for distribution to the households, the official added.
