In a bizarre and violent episode reportedly fuelled by intoxication, five tourists from Tamil Nadu were arrested by Calangute Police on Friday afternoon for allegedly assaulting two locals at Sinquerim, near the Taj Fort Aguada Hotel.

According to police, the incident occurred around noon, when the group of tourists approached two locals who were peacefully fishing along the Sinquerim coastline.

The tourists allegedly tried to forcibly grab the fishing equipment from the locals, sparking a confrontation.

When the locals resisted, one of the accused allegedly attacked one of the locals with a knife, while another restrained the same victim and threatened to kill him.

The group then turned their aggression towards the second local, allegedly assaulting him with a pair of scissors.

Both victims were subsequently beaten with slaps and fist blows by the group, police said.

Calangute Police quickly responded to the complaint and arrested the following accused individuals: Shakir Nasar, Shaka Vil Mutthu, Kumar Sampad, Tamil Selval and S. Sudakar Katan. All five are residents of Tamil Nadu and were on a visit to Goa at the time of the incident.

An FIR has been registered against the accused under Sections 118(1), 126(2), and 351(3) read with 3(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertain to assault, criminal intimidation and group violence.

Further investigation is underway, and police are probing whether the accused were under the influence of alcohol or any other substances at the time of the attack.
