Mystery still shrouds the fate of the 50-seater toilet block proposed at the Cutbona Fishing jetty around a decade ago as part of the River Sal rejuvenation project.
Indeed, sanitation amenities at the Cutbona fishing jetty has been an often-asked question what with the fishing jetty playing host to thousands of migrant workers during the peak fishing season.
In the absence of adequate toilet facilities at the jetty and with the open fields coming in handy for the migrant workers to answer nature’s call, sanitation has been a long-standing issue plaguing Goa’s largest fishing hub.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins has underscored the need to not only tone up the sanitation amenities, but offer the services free of cost to the migrant workers by recovering the cost from the boat owners.
“We have come across two aspects to the issue of sanitation. One, the existing toilets are grossly inadequate to cater to the requirements. And, secondly, to make the workers use the sanitation facility, the Fisheries Department should introduce a monthly pass system for these workers where in the cost of the monthly pass was to be paid for by the boat owners there by compensating Sulabh International for the services offered”, he added.
Martins further pointed out that the Friday’s inspection has brought to the fore the mystery over the 50-seater toilet block for which NOC was given by the Velim Panchayat way back in 2013.
