GOACAN volunteers will scrutinise government departments and corporations over their compliance with mandatory information disclosure norms under the Right to Information (RTI) Act as part of a 60-day campaign that began on Monday.
The campaign, launched to mark the anniversary of the RTI Act, 2005, will examine whether public authorities have published the prescribed manuals under Section 4(1)(b) and proactively disclosed information under the Act’s 17 specified categories.
"Alongside monitoring compliance, we will educate consumers about their 'Right to be Informed' under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, covering essential services and sectors such as electricity, bus transport, food safety, packaged commodities, tourism, fire safety, telephone services, weights and measures, cable television, LPG cylinders, ethanol-blended petrol, public toilets, fair price shops, banking services and post offices," GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins.
The initiative, he said, is to empower citizens to access information, question public authorities and demand accountability in the delivery of civic and consumer services.
The campaign will conclude on December 10, Human Rights Day.
