After an initial weak monsoon phase, Goa was lashed by heavy rains over the past 24 hours with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa attributing the active spell to a low-pressure area and upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea.
The State’s rainfall deficit reduced from 12 per cent recorded till Wednesday to 10 per cent on Thursday. Goa recorded 69.9 mm of rain on Thursday “ the sixth-highest single-day total this monsoon, which began on June 1. The heaviest showers so far were on July 3 (160.9 mm) and June 12 (100.8 mm).
In the last 24 hours till Thursday morning, Mapusa received the highest rainfall at 90.2 mm, followed by Pernem (89.4 mm), Quepem (84 mm), Panaji (83 mm), Ela-Old Goa (75 mm), Dabolim (70.2 mm), Sanquelim (67.4 mm) and Sanguem (65.7 mm).
Moderate rain was reported from Margao (63.4 mm), Mormugao (62.8 mm), Dharbandora (46.4 mm), Canacona (45.2 mm) and Ponda (43 mm), while other parts of the State saw only light to very light showers. By Thursday evening, rainfall activity eased to light showers in most areas.
The State has been on Yellow Alert till August 17.
