Illegal transport of beef from the Belagavi region into Goa through the  Chorla Ghat route has surfaced again despite earlier action by Goa  Police and alerts from residents.

On Friday morning, a pickup  carrying vegetables from Belagavi to Goa was found transporting beef  illegally in Honda, Sattari. Alert residents stopped the vehicle (KA22B3542)  after noticing blood dripping onto the road. On inspection, they found  about 750 kg of beef and informed police. Officers from Valpoi reached  the spot and detained the pickup and its driver, Sadik B. Naikwadi of  Belagavi.

Locals followed and questioned the driver, who  allegedly avoided clear answers and used abusive language when they  tried to check the vehicle.

Police later searched the pickup and  found about 750 kg of beef packed in bags in the front section,  concealed under vegetables and fruits. The vehicle, which residents said  regularly transports produce from Belagavi to Goa, is suspected to have  been used earlier for illegal transport.

Around seven such cases  have been reported in the past year, and cow protection groups had  urged police to act. Residents expressed anger over the use of vegetable  transport vehicles for such activities.

Police seized the pickup  and registered a case against the driver. Veterinary officials examined  the beef, which was later disposed of as per procedure.
