Two persons were killed and two others seriously injured after a car plunged into a deep gorge in the Chorla Ghat area along the Goa–Karnataka border late Friday night. The victims were returning to Goa after shopping for a wedding in Belagavi when the accident occurred.
According to information, an Eeco car (registration number GA-07-3978) was travelling from Belagavi towards Goa. Near Jambhali Junction in Chorla Ghat, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the car to veer off the road and fall into a gorge.
In the accident, Mohan Ramdas Waghmode (58) and his wife Renuka Mohan Waghmode (48), residents of Vodlem Bhat, Merces, died on the spot.
The other two occupants — Nivrutti Vitthal Waghmode (57) and Ranibai Nivrutti Waghmode (47), residents of Upper Harvalem, Sanquelim — sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim.
Soon after the accident, local residents rushed to the spot and assisted in the rescue operation. The injured were initially taken by a 108 ambulance to the Sanquelim Sub-District Hospital for primary treatment before being shifted to GMC, Bambolim for further medical care.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Bambolim for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at the Valpoi Police Station, and Police Sub-Inspector Prathamesh Gawas is conducting further investigation.
Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns over safety in the Chorla Ghat stretch, noting that four accidents have already occurred in the area this year. Locals have urged authorities to implement immediate safety measures at the dangerous bends to prevent further tragedies.
