The prestigious Mercedes will soon dot the fleet of cars at Raj Bhavan. The State government has acceded to Governor Mridula Sinha’s request and sanctioned the Rs 62-odd lakhs for a Mercedes E200.

The luxury wheels will soon replace the Honda Accord which drove the Governor on official engagements or otherwise.

It is much higher than the Rs 21-lakh value ceiling for vehicles that the Chief Minister of the state is entitled as per current norms in force. Cabinet ministers are entitled to cars worth a maximum of Rs 17.5-lakhs.

Interestingly, at least three cabinet ministers -- Vijay Sardesai, Pandurang Madkaikar and Rohan Khaunte -- have forsaken the State provided vehicle for their much more expensive and higher in class personal luxury cars.

While Sardesai drives in his personal Jaguar, Madkaikar used to be driven in a Mercedes SUV and Khaunte in a variety of cars including a Porsche.
