Extending support to the striking workers of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), the Aam Admi Party on Thursday threatened to stage a morcha along with the staff to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant if the issue is not resolved in the next three days.
Speaking to reporters, AAP leader Sandesh Telekar said it was unfortunate that workers who had been dedicated in their work even during the pandemic were not being paid salaries on time.
"This has become a regular scenario where these workers are fighting for their salaries. While their wages are not paid on time, retired people have not got their full and final settlement and they have not received their arrears.”
“Even their instalments of LIC and PF are not reflecting in their accounts. What is worse is that none of the three BJP legislators who had been fighting for control have even met them till date,” said Telekar.
He accused the administration of having miserably failed to resolve the issues of the MMC workers.
“We demand that these issues be resolved immediately and not by mere assurances because they have lost faith in the government. AAP will stand by these workers and if these issues are not resolved in three days, we will lead a morcha with these workers to the doors of the Chief Minister and officials concerned," warned Telekar.
AAP Mormugao leader Parshuram Sonurlekar accused outgoing councillors of allowing the State government to walk away with the octroi which was being collected by MMC.
"There is a list of around 250 defaulters with a total outstanding of around Rs 50 crore, but MMC is not in a position to recover the dues. While these workers were driven the entire last month for recovery of outstanding dues, their salaries are not paid. If these outstandings are recovered, I don't think the MMC will face any salary issues," said Sonurlekar.
