The Congress on Monday demanded that the State government forthwith accept the report of the Lokayukta and act on the recommendations after the Lokayukta found that there was a possibility of of conspiracy and kickbacks in handing out beach cleaning contracts.
Addressing media persons at a press conference, Congressman Yatish Naik also questioned why the coalition partners who were then in the opposition and had raised the issue of a beach cleaning scam even in the assembly were now silent.
"If the government has any respect for probity in public life then they have to adopt the report of the Lokayukta and act in terms of the most detailed report filed by the Lokayukta which has examined all the evidence that is before it," Naik said.
He also questioned who in the government was behind the Anti Corruption Bureau closing the beach cleaning scam case.
"At whose instance had the ACB closed the investigation? Why is the ACB acting as a caged parrot? The government ought to have acted in the case," Naik said pointing out that the Lokayukta found that the contracts were continued despite dissatisfactory service and bills were cleared without proper scrutiny.
"The report indicts the then minister, the department and most importantly brings to the fore the botching up of the investigation by the ACB," Naik said while demanding that the case be now handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate.
In a reference to Vijai Sardesai and Rohan Khaunte who had also filed a complaint before the Lokayukta, Naik sought that they put pressure on the current government to accept the report of the Lokayukta and act in terms of the report.
The demands come even as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has sought 90 days for his government to act on the report
