Social activist Pratima Coutinho has criticised the police for registering a non-cognisable offence on her complaint of harassment by an unknown person and further requested her to approach the proper court of law for redressal of her grievances.
Addressing the media, Pratima said she had approached the Margao police with copies sent to the Superintendent of Police, South, and senior officials, hoping that the police would track down the accused and deliver justice. “Today, I received a letter from the Margao police stating that they have registered a non-cognisable case against the accused under section 351 (4) of the BNS. The letter has requested me to approach the proper court of law since the case is non-cognisable,” she told the media.
Pratima, however, demanded to know whether it is not the duty of the police to identify the accused person who harassed her on WhatsApp. “I had approached the police hoping they would identify the accused and deliver justice, but now they are sending me to the court just because the case is non-cognisable,” she said.
The social activist pointed out that even Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is aware of the complaint lodged by her and had promised action when they met at a social function.
