BELAGAVI
The issue was taken up at a meeting that was convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, presided over by Additional Commissioner of Belagavi Dr Suresh Itnal.
Based on the findings of the raids carried out against suppliers of synthetic milk in the district recently and acting on the complaints by activists, Dr Itnal has directed the police and officials of the health department to submit a detailed report. He has also directed the officials to file complaints against those engaged in adulteration of milk.
It may be recalled that authorities under the direction of Tehshildars of Athani and Raibag talukas in Belagavi district had carried out raids on milkmen who were engaged in supply of synthetic milk and related products to consumers and private dairies in the region.
According to official sources, these dairies were allegedly engaged in supply of milk to north Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
“Adulteration of milk in any form including supply of synthetic milk is a serious offence and is hazardous as far as health of citizens is concerned. After receiving complaints about the laxity observed by investigating officials in this issue, I have directed police, intelligence and health departments to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit a detailed report at the earliest,” Dr Itnal told The Goan.
“The officials have also been directed not to observe leniency in this issue in anyway,” he added.
Expressing confidence that those engaged in this hazardous practice would be exposed and dealt with firmly after the inquiry, Dr Itnal said he has also directed the officials to initiate stringent measures to prevent adulteration of milk and milk-related products in the district.
