MARGAO
With the Margao Municipal Council tightening the screws on unauthorized contractors dumping waste at Sonsodo, the Sonsodo-Curtorim road has become the latest dumping ground for unscrupulous contractors to dispose of the waste.
Waste stacked in bundles were seen dumped along the road on the Curtorim side of the road, just metes away from the Sonsodo dump, indicating that MMC’s slew of measures to curb unauthorized disposal of waste at the dump has had an effect on the ground.
The Margao Municipal Council had recently barricaded the entry of vehicles heading towards the dump right on the Sonsodo-Curtorim road to prevent contractors from unloading waste at the dump. Besides, Closed Circuit TV surveillance cameras have been installed right at the entrance gate to the Sonsodo dump and that the security cabin has been shifted from opposite the Holy Cross chapel right at the entrance gate to monitor and cap the illegal disposal of the waste.
All these measures have been put in place by the Margao Municipal Council during discussions with agencies such as the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), which had raised fears that remediation of the waste at the dump may not have an impact if unauthorized waste from contractors keep finding its
way at the dump day in and out.
Asked to comment on the disposal of the waste alongside the Sonsodo-Curtorim road, a MMC official pointed out that it’s now clear that unscrupulous contractors were involved in disposing of their waste at Sonsodo without any authorization from the civic body.
In fact, sources in the know informed that though the Margao Municipal Council had banned entry of outside waste into the city, there’s been a steady and continuous flow of waste at Sonsodo over the years.
The MMC official pointed out that with the MMC tightening the screws on the unauthorized entry of vehicles and waste inside the Sonsodo site, there’s a real possibility of the unscrupulous elements disposing of the waste at the black spots and along the road sides.
