After over a decade, the Masters of Education (MEd) degree programme is set to recommence in the state from the academic year 2019-2020. The two year degree programme will be conducted at the GVM’s Dada Vaidya College of Education, in Farmagudi, and will be affiliated to the Goa University (GU).
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has given the college permission for one unit, or 50 students, and already, 25 applications for the course have been received, principal of the college Dr Allan Abreo told “The Goan” on Monday.
“The programme is a full-time programme and is based on the choice-based credit system (CBCS). Admission to the programme has already started, and we’ve been receiving a lot of interest from prospective candidates,” he said.
Candidates with a BEd degree are eligible to apply to the MEd degree. An MEd degree is one of the eligibility criteria to teach in a BEd college.
“There was a need to restart the MEd degree programme in Goa since the domicile and knowledge of Konkani rules makes it hard to fill vacant posts in BEd colleges. Those with an MEd from out of Goa were not eligible to apply to these vacancies, so there was a need to start the programme to equip Goan candidates to teach BEd,” he said.
The programme will be inaugurated later this month.
Prior to this, the degree used to be offered by the Nirmala Institute of Education (NIE) till the 2000s, but it was shut down around 13 years ago.
The MEd degree is different from IGNOU’s MA in Education, which allows you to teach only the core (foundation) papers to BEd students. With an MEd degree however, one can teach both the foundation and methodology papers.
With an MEd degree (and a NET/SET), candidates will be able to teach in the five BEd colleges in Goa affiliated to GU, as well as in SNDT (not affiliated to GU), and the four DElEd programmes in the state.
