Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Wednesday raised alarm in the Goa Legislative Assembly over unchecked accumulation of garbage across the State, calling it a growing civic and environmental crisis.
Speaking during the Zero Hour, Alemao said dry and wet waste is piling up in public spaces including beaches, agricultural fields, forests, water bodies and along major roads such as the Aquem bypass, Borim-Bethora bypass, Ramanagari in Sao Jose de Areal and areas around Mardol.
“This unchecked build-up of waste is not merely an eyesore. It poses a serious health hazard, contaminates local ecosystems and severely undermines the image of our State as a responsible and sustainable tourist destination,” Alemao warned.
He further stated that the issue goes beyond sanitation, impacting public health, environmental sustainability and the economy. “Tourists visiting our coastal belts and heritage zones are increasingly confronted with scenes of waste-laden beaches and clogged water channels,” he said.
