An alert Drishti lifesaver on Thursday nabbed a thief at Calangute who snatched a handbag from a lady in broad daylight and was trying to escape with it, while bags belonging to another tourist were stolen in another incident on the beach.
According to reports, a couple was strolling at Calangute beach at about 3 pm, when a man snatched the lady’s handbag and ran with it.
Drishti Lifesaver Leslie Rodrigues (21), who was patrolling the beach, noticed the commotion when the couple called for help.
The lifesaver spotted the thief running with the bag and chased him. Rodrigues caught up with the thief, wrestled him and with the assistance of people, pinned the burglar to the ground.
A call was then placed by the lifesaving team to the local police. Rodrigues handed over the thief to the cops on their arrival and the bag was returned to its owner.
Earlier in the day at around 12.30 pm, a tourist who wears an artificial prosthetic leg placed his bags along with his prosthetic leg on the shore while he went for a swim.
On his return, he was shocked to see his artificial leg on the beach while his bags were stolen. The distraught tourist approached the lifesavers for assistance. An attempt was made by the team to locate the thief but they drew a blank.
Meanwhile, Drishti lifesaver Leslie Rodrigues has conducted three rescues in the sea along Calangute beach over the last three weeks.
