Reacting to a report of alleged issues at the Mapusa Municipal Market, Deputy Speaker and local MLA Joshua D’Souza denied any illegal activities, stating that “all is well” in the market.
D’Souza also rejected claims of illegal protection money (hafta) collection and extortion of vendors. The controversy arose from a report in The Goan, which alleged that a temporary staff member named Arif was forcibly collecting market fees (Sopo) from vendors. The report suggested that Arif, with political support, was intimidating vendors and demanding payments.
D’Souza firmly denied these claims, explaining that Arif’s role was simply to oversee market operations at night, not to collect fees or protection money. The MLA also highlighted the successful management of the Matoli Bazaar, an annual market held before Ganesh Chaturthi, and insisted that the market has been running smoothly in recent years. He dismissed the claims as misinformation spread by “disgruntled elements.”
Despite the MLA’s reassurances, the controversy surrounding the alleged extortion and irregularities in the market continues to generate debate. The report by The Goan has led to calls for further investigation into the claims, with vendors and citizens expressing concern over the handling of market activities.
