The Ganje-Nanus road continues to be in a precarious condition leading to several accidents and this has prompted angry citizens and motorists to serve a deadline on the authorities to stop the work within eight days.
A project coming up in the area has resulted in digging in the area leading to the present situation. The situation has been worsened by the rains and is likely to get worse.
Motorists, especially two-wheeler riders are finding it difficult to travel on the muck-filled and potholed road. This has been the situation for the last two months and there has not been any improvement.
Daily commuters and villagers in the Ganje area have complained repeatedly about the condition of the road but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
It is learned that a project is being set up at a cost of Rs 100 crore on the Mhadei river at Ganje. Large ditches have been dug on both sides of the road for laying a pipeline. The work was supposed to be completed before the monsoon season but has dragged on.
Citizens said the work of laying this pipeline was started after the onset of rains and this has led to the spread of large amounts of mud on both sides of the road. The entire road has become completely muddy, which has led to several two-wheelers skidding, they said and added, “In the last fortnight we have seen several accidents”.
The long rainy season is likely to compound the problems and the citizens have demanded immediate stoppage of work of laying the pipeline and clearance of the mud on both sides of the road.
This vital link sees traffic from Valpoi and Ponda. Commuters take this road to travel to Ponda, Margao and Vasco. The possibility of a major accident cannot be ruled out looking at the bad condition of the road in a two-kilometre stretch, motorists said.
