Anjuna panch member, Davanand Shirodkar alias Daktu and his wife were assaulted with a sickle by the panch’s brother-in-law in Anjuna on Sunday afternoon, police informed.
The panch who was attacked at three different places underwent an operation and is under observation in a private hospital in Mapusa.
His wife who was also attacked has minor injuries, police said.
According to police, the incident happened at around 1 pm when the panch and his wife, Reema Shirodkar went to the residence of the panch’s sister-in-law at Mazal-vaddo, Anjuna.
The accused, Geetesh Pednekar attacked his sister and brother-in-law with a sickle apparently due to some property matter, sources said.
Police, however, denounced the property angle and said that the accused was mentally unstable.
“We will refer the accused to the IPHB. He is not keeping too well,” said Tushar Lotlikar, Mapusa PI, who holds additional charge of Anjuna Police Station.
The panch member was attacked at three places on the head, face and hands while the wife was hit on the hands and shoulder. The panch’s wife is employed as a clerk at the Anjuna panchayat.
The accused has not been arrested but will be referred to the IPHB, Bambolim.
PSI, Harish Vaigankar is investigating further.
