The struggle for power continues to grip the Mormugao Municipal council (MMC) as the opposition panel of 13 councillors, led by Nandadeep Raut, on Monday afternoon, moved a no-confidence motion against MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar following a special council meeting called to discuss pre-monsoon works.
The latest political twist is looked upon as a fight between BJP legislators, where a panel of councillors supported by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida along with a few councillors backed by Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho have moved a no-confidence motion against the present MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar of the ruling panel backed by Urban Development Minister Milind Naik.
The no-confidence against Gaonkar and MMC Vice Chairperson was signed by 12 MMC councillors.
The motion was moved against the MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar under section 56 of the Goa Municipalities Act stating that majority of the councillors had lost confidence in him as he failed to take them into confidence in the matters pertaining to the council and behaved arrogantly and arbitrarily with the general public.
Gaonkar has been shown as inefficient in his work, misused his powers bestowed and resorted to large-scale corruption. A special meeting of councillors has been called for to decide upon motion against Gaonkar.
This is the second no-confidence motion against Gaonkar by the panel, the previous being moved against him on April 25.
The presiding officer had declared Gaönkar voted out of power by 12-0 votes after controversy over a vote which was marked by pen.
Gaonkar had subsequently filed a revision petition challenging his ouster.
